How do I find the best executive talent for positions in the USA?

In a recent webinar conducted for the German American Business Association, based in Munich and Atlanta, Matthias Rode (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and Bernard Van der Lande (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) provided information and support to German companies that are recruiting for positions in the USA. They advised them on what they should consider during their search and selection processes in the USA. The webinar was attended by more than 20 decision-makers from mainly small and medium-sized German firms, all of whom greatly appreciated the valuable information that Matthias and Bernard provided.

In summary, search and selection methods in the USA differ significantly to those in Germany: top candidates, especially those with work experience in northern European companies, are hard to find. Salaries, particularly in senior and middle management, are usually considerably higher than in Germany, company cars are not “must-haves”, and social security, benefits and annual leave differ to some degree. Often there isn’t an employment contract, but an offer letter, a job description and an employee handbook instead. Written testimonials are rarely provided so references have to be obtained, periods of notice are shorter and candidates are more flexible in their availability. In the USA frequent and numerous career changes are seen positively, whereas in Germany candidates who have changed their employer several times are considered disloyal. In connection with management and communication styles, CEOs in the USA are movers, shakers and doers, and generally less consensus-oriented than in Germany, communication tends to be less direct than it is in Germany, praise is given more freely but sometimes misunderstood.

Matthias and Bernard also described three cases studies from recent searches to illustrate these points. For further information on hiring executive talent in the USA, please contact them directly.
